Chapter 19

I let out a sigh of relief and slid down to the ground, holding on to my ability as I sipped a mana potion. Using my other hand, I pulled out a healing potion to wash it down.

Fuck, that had been close.

Another explosion shook the alley, and I decided sitting still wasn’t in my best interest. Heading out of the alley, I dropped [Camouflage] and threw the bloody cloak around my shoulders. With everything happening now, it blended in far better and made me look like everyone else rushing about.

People were in various states. Many of them were moving away from the burning bar, but there were also a great number heading towards the bar and trying to stop the flames from spreading.

In all the chaos, I hurried towards the entrance we had used to enter.

“No one leaves!” The fat elf had gotten over to the exit first and had made a wall of fire. “That rat is still here, and I can’t risk him getting out.” The elf kept casting his eyes back and forth, trying to find me.

Rather than slink away like the one he was looking for, I joined in with the crowd and started shouting with them in a low pitch hoping that mob mentality would win out.

I wasn’t so lucky.

“Sirus,” Madam Root’s voice drifted over the crowd. “Really? What’s got you all riled up?” The seductive elf matron sashayed through the crowd that parted around her. “Don’t tell me someone ran off with some of your coin?”

“We are both in this together, Root. There was someone snooping around, looking for things that neither of us wants to give away.” Sirus’ jowls wiggled as he continued to scan the crowd.

Madam Root gasped in mock horror. “You don’t say? People snooping about here in our den of hedonistic delight?” She rolled her eyes. “You will remove yourself and allow our customers to come and go freely, or I’ll remind you who’s in charge here.”

She waved her hand and wind picked up, banishing the flames that Sirus had used to block people. It was clear on his face that he knew that he’d lost.

People hurried past him to escape the Underroot. Most would probably be back as soon as their vices came calling. The present conflict was only enough to get them to leave for the moment.

“Oh, and Sirus, clean up the mess you’ve made or I’ll have someone do it and you’ll be billed,” Madam Root called over her shoulder, walking back through the crowd.

As she moved, she placed a hand on my shoulder and turned me to follow her. “Squeak Squeak,” she teased in a low voice. “I thought you were playing with a kitty.”

I stiffened.

“Come now. You’re my customer, and your session with the Nekorian can’t be over yet. Can’t believe such a pretty little mouse snuck away from that cat.” The Madam was treating everything as completely inconsequential as she herded me forcefully back.

“You said anything was for sale here?” I asked.

“Yep,” the Madam answered easily.
